Poetry is Not a Luxury: Launching at Poetry Africa

poetry-is-not-a-luxury2013 has been an exciting year for Poetry Potion. We set out to publish quarterly journals with themes that writers must pick apart, interpret and produce something amazing thereafter. The first print quarterly, themed On Being Human, was launched at Time of The Writer and the response has been great. Now, we will be launching the third edition of the year at Poetry Africa International Poetry Festival on the 19 October.

The third quarterly print of Poetry Potion is themed Poetry Is Not a Luxury. This edition is inspired by Audre Lorde’s essay of the same name and it is dedicated to women in poetry whose work inspires, enlightens and reflects their deepest thoughts and emotions.

Poetry Is Not a Luxury features a profile of actress, dancer and poet,  Tereska Muishond. She talks about her journey as a creative spirit and her latest work Te Veel Vir ‘n Coloured Girls.

The Poet Muses section features short profiles of two incredible poets, Isabella Motadinyane and Ingrid Jonker. Both poets have passed away but their work remains some of the best ever and their contribution to the poetry scene will forever be appreciated.

This edition features poetry by Fasaha Mshairi, Mandy Mitchell, Ayabulela Tutuse, Monique Barnard, Saurell Boyers and Morula wa Kutukgolo. Poetry Seen section features a photo essay by Sindisiwe Buthelezi of Azania Zulu. The photos are of women from KwaNdebele in Mpumalanga and KwaBulawayo in Zimbabwe.

Poetry Potion will also have a panel discussion hosted by our editor and publisher, Duduzile Zamantungwa Mabaso. The panel will be made up of Natalia Molebatsi, Malika Ndlovu and Busiswa Gqulu. The panel discussion is about women poets exploring the poetic landscape through the lens of Audre Lorde’s Poetry is Not a Luxury.
