African Writers Trust is planning a Poetry Training workshop under the topic: Understanding the Business of Poetry to be held at AWT offices, Kyaliwajjala-Namugongo from 3rd -4th December 2019. The training will target emerging poets looking to gain skills in poetry writing and editing, practising poets who wish to explore prospects of publishing their work, and performance poets who wish to grow an excellent brand on the local market. The workshop will be led by one of Uganda’s celebrated poets and Literature professor, Laban Erapu. The training will focus on directing and stimulating participants to improve their craft.
Workshop Description:
The workshop will explore understanding the business of poetry, offer in-depth discussion on how to grow a brand as a poet, and how to make money from poetry. In addition, the training will involve assignments, performances and readings. Furthermore, the workshop will consider such broad questions as:
- Finding your poetic voice
- Performance poetry/spoken word
- Editing your poetry
- Publishing locally and internationally
SCOPE
- Training, professional guidance and support to grow and produce better work
The workshop leader alongside other guest speakers will engage the participants in rigorous workshop exercises and sessions that will enable them hone their craft.
- Q & A sessions
The Q & A sessions will allow participants adequate time to interact with the workshop leader and the guest speakers in order to gain a better understanding of the topics discussed. The speakers will share their personal experiences and offer tips that have enabled them to thrive in their respective capacities.
- Performances & readings
The participants will be required to perform and read from their works to crown off the two-day training. The material to be presented will come from what the participants will have created during the workshop.

Costs

- Workshop materials include: Pen, paper, handouts.
