CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: AFRICAN WRITERS TRUST EMERGING WRITERS WORKSHOP

African Writers Trust (AWT) is hosting a training workshop for emerging writers of creative nonfiction with a particular focus on memoir writing and personal stories. The workshop will integrate both virtual and in-person platforms and experiences, and include an online writing workshop, book discussions and peer reviews.

The workshop is supported by the International Literature Showcase Collaboration Fund. The International Literature Showcase is a partnership between the National Centre for Writing and the British Council.

Workshop Tutor

The workshop will be facilitated by Eric Ngalle Charles a Cameroonian writer, poet, playwright, and human rights activist based in Wales, UK. He was awarded the Creative Wales Award 2017/2018 for his work on the topics of migration, trauma, and memory. In his autobiography I, Eric Ngalle: One Man’s Journey Crossing Continents from Africa to Europe (2019), he recounts his journey to Europe, where he spent several years seeking refuge.

Guest Speaker:

Precious Colette Kemigisha is a Ugandan writer, editor and publisher. Her short stories have been published online in magazines like Omenana and Lolwe, and in anthologies published by Writivism, Goethe (SA) and others. In 2020 she was privileged to be chosen amongst five other international writers to participate in the first-ever virtual residency organised by LCB Diplomantique (Berlin). Her essay from the residency was published in an anthology titled Un_masking Difference. Her novella, Black Soil, will be released in December.

Who can participate?

The workshop is open to emerging writers of creative non-fiction aged between 18-25 from East and the Horn of Africa: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.

Duration:

The workshop will run from 7th to 10th October, 2021.

Venue:

The workshop will be held at the AWT Training Centre, which is hosted at Hotsprings Villas, Ndejje, along Entebbe Road, in Uganda.

Benefits

  • At the end of the workshop, your work, which you will have developed during the training will be published in an anthology
  • The opportunity to gain an understanding of the possibilities of the creative non-fiction form and genre, through mentoring and guidance from the tutor
  • Participating writers will gain knowledge and methods for reading and analysing works of creative non-fiction
  • Participating writers will be directed to opportunities aimed at developing their careers such as contests, prizes, publishing opportunities, trainings, conferences and others.

Costs:

Each participant will be required to pay a subsidised fee of UGX 350,000 / USD 100.  The fee entitles you to:

  • An online writing workshop
  • Full board accommodation at Hotsprings Villas for three nights (including bed, breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
  • A free copy of I, Eric Ngalle: One Man’s Journey Crossing Continents from Africa to Europe by Eric Ngalle Charles and The Girl Who Smiled Beads by Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil
  • Workshop materials including handouts and access to Wi-Fi.
